Globulin

Table of contents

Globulin is a group of blood proteins that support your immune defenses and carry substances like hormones, lipids, and metals through your bloodstream. It is usually worked out by subtracting albumin from your total protein, and most healthy adults sit within a fairly narrow range.

What globulin measures

Globulin is not a single protein but a family that includes antibodies (immunoglobulins) produced by your immune cells, along with carrier and clotting proteins made mainly by your liver. Your liver and immune system share the work of keeping these proteins in balance. Because antibodies are part of this group, your globulin level gives a broad picture of immune activity rather than reflecting one specific job.

What high or low levels mean

High globulin often points to sustained immune activity. Chronic infections, ongoing inflammation, and autoimmune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis or lupus can raise it, and a marked increase sometimes signals blood cancers like multiple myeloma. Low globulin is less common and may reflect trouble making or holding onto proteins, seen with liver disease, kidney conditions that leak protein, or immune deficiency. Because this number sits next to albumin, clinicians often read it through the albumin/globulin (A/G) ratio, since a shifted ratio can be more telling than either value alone. A single out-of-range result is rarely a cause for alarm. If your level stays abnormal, or comes with fatigue, frequent infections, swelling, or unexplained weight loss, follow up with your clinician for further testing.

Globulin FAQ

What does it mean if your globulin is high?

A high result usually reflects increased immune protein production. It is often linked to chronic infection, inflammation, or an autoimmune condition, and less often to blood cancers, so your clinician will interpret it with your other results.

Is a low globulin level dangerous?

Not automatically, but it can point to reduced immune protein production or protein loss from liver or kidney problems. Mild dips are common, while persistent low readings deserve a closer look and possibly repeat testing.

What is a normal albumin to globulin ratio?

The A/G ratio is typically slightly above 1, often around 1.0 to 2.0. A ratio outside this range can prompt further evaluation of liver, kidney, or immune function.
